How to Create a Productive Workspace

March 31, 2020

Are you working or studying from home? For many, this can be very distracting. However, if you take the time to create a productive workspace, you will set yourself up for success! Follow these tips to create a productive, personalized area for work and study.

How to Create a Productive Workspace

Have a comfortable place to sit

You do not need to invest in an expensive desk or chair to have a workspace that works for you. However, you do need to designate a workspace. Keep from working on places like your bed: this area is reserved for sleeping, and bending over and working will lead to back and neck problems. Instead, designate a desk or table as your workspace, and focus on making this space work for you. The first thing you should focus on? What you’re sitting on! Make sure you’re comfortable; if you aren’t, find a new chair, or use pillows to help yourself feel more comfortable.

Make opportunities for movement

Do not sit the entire time. Give yourself a workspace that allows you to work while you’re moving! Consider making a standup desk using a high countertop, or give yourself some space to move and stretch if you are doing something like watching an instructional video. Keeping your blood flowing will bring oxygen to your brain, so you will be able to think more clearly.

Have good lighting

Make sure your space is easy to work in at all times of the day. Try to work close to a window so that you can enjoy natural light; also make sure that your space is set up with bright lights to help you work after sunset. However, make sure that these lights are filtered and not too bright: this can cause headaches.

Spruce it up with plants

Invest in a small plant to liven up your workspace. It will cheer you up!

Make it distraction-free

Choose a workspace that is free of distractions. This means avoiding a place where you have a lot to look at (for example, choose a workspace that looks into your backyard rather than your front yard, where people are passing by). Of course, make sure TVs are turned off in this space as well.

Make it electronically functional

Your plugs for your computer and other devices should be easily accessible. If you have headphones or a mouse that require charging, try to charge these (and all other electronic devices) before bed so that you wake up with the tools you need to succeed.

Keep it clean

Keep your space clean and tidy. Consider cleanup as a part of your work or study day! If you need to, invest in a candle or something else to make your space more enjoyable. Some people enjoy using an essential oil diffuser: scents such as peppermint or lemon wake you up and give you energy!
